Shakepeare Lover T-shirts For Christmas

Our family loves to read aloud. Sometimes the best books of all for out loud reading are the classics! Have you ever tried reading a Shakepeare play out loud in your family by assigning several parts to each family member? It can be a lot of fun. I would suggest starting with a scene or two from familiar Shakespeare plays like A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet.

Kindergarten Favorites

My sister is a teacher and I asked her for a list of some favorite books she uses to read aloud to her students. Some are old favorites, others were new to me. Some are re-tellings of classic fairy tales. I'm going to check out the ones I'm unfamiliar with and will give a review later. In the meantime, here is her list:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Brown Bear, Brow Bear by Eric Carle
The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle
Chrysanthemum
Humphrey the Lost Whale
Fredrick
The Big Red Barn
Three Billy Goats Gruff
The Little Red Hen
Swimmy
Red, White and Blue
The Giving Tree
When I looked at the list one thing stood out in my mind. A lot of these books involve young children in the repetitive language as they anticipate a familiar phrase popping up over and over. Kids love to 'read along' out loud and repetition allows them to do it. So enjoy!

Artemis Fowl Books

My twelve year old is suddenly into Artemis Fowl. I admit it, I had never heard of Artemis Fowl myself, but it seems he is extremely popular with children of my son's age. A brand new book 6 in the series came out this month, The Time Paradox. One reason I bring it up is because I'm starting to see our Read Aloud habits trickling down to my children, who now read aloud to each other. My daughter has been reading aloud to my 12 year old so that they can enjoy this book together. Now that's success.

My Favorite Book Series

Most everyone has a favorite book or series of books by a beloved author. One of my favorites is a series of books written by Ralph Moody about his years growing up in Colorado, Massachussetts and Maine. Ralph's family is unusually successful in teaching values and life lessons to their children in ways that shape them into becoming stand out individuals in every day circumstances.
Ralph's escapades are delightful, his parents and siblings unforgettable, and the many people he has met form a backdrop for teaching principles in memorable ways.
In the series are:
Little Britches
Man Of The Family
The Home Ranch
Mary Emma and Company
The Fields Of Home
Shaking The Nickel Bush
The Dry Divide
and Horse Of A Different Color
If you haven't read Ralph's story, I hope you'll try it out. They are our all-time family read aloud favorites and my older children have their own set of Ralph's books in their own homes now.
If you have a favorite Read Aloud Series of books, feel free to post a response and share it.

Welcome To Read Aloud Books For Families

Welcome to my blog! By the fact that you stopped by I am assuming that you are interested in books to read aloud with your family. Let me give a brief introduction about myself and why I think reading aloud is so important.
I am the mother of seven, currently ages 26, 25, 23, 20 (twins), 17 and 12. Our family has made reading aloud a part of our lives from the time our oldest son was a baby.
Over the years we have read many books together as a family.
From our earliest sharing of Dr. Seuss classics to reading aloud The Lord Of The Rings and other books for audiences of all ages, we have enjoyed the time spent together and the wonderful world of books and storytelling by great authors. All of our older children have developed into readers with a love for great literature, even those who struggled with learning to read due to disability.
I believe strongly that "a family who reads together stays together". I hope you will continue to visit my blog where I will share:
